Reaction time is critical for the health of the person infected with streptococcus, according to the pediatrician Marios Andreou who, speaking in the morning on the show “Today” on SKAI clarified the “grey” areas that exist.

The doctor explained that the streptococcus it is easily transmitted through droplets to young and old, however, children are more vulnerable.

Most people are confused because, as he explained, the germ attacks the tonsils. For this reason it is required immediate clinical examination by the pediatrician and a strep test to determine immediately if the child has strep

If the test is positive, an antibiotic is given for ten days and in the vast majority the microbe is “killed”.

However, there is also invasive streptococcus which may when other factors are present to be fatal (e.g. if the sick person is immunocompromised or has other viruses).

In this case, the pediatrician requested the attention of the parents, noting that if a child has taken an antibiotic, but the fever continues two 24 hours later, then immediate transport to the hospital is required.

Mr. Andreou explained that there have always been microbial infections leading to death from similar microbes such as pneumococcal and meningococcal, but they have been eliminated due to vaccines.
