Particularly revealing on the subject of the chemicals called “rape pills”, which are being examined if they were administered by the perpetrators to the 24-year-old rape victim in Thessaloniki, was Professor of the First Laboratory of Pharmacology of the Aristotle University, Antonis Goulas, who tells GRTimes that these substances are a major issue for authorities in foreign countries, such as the UK.
In essence, the professor stated that this is not one substance, but two – three, maybe more, which could be considered as a “rape pill”. The first and most widespread is fluorionitrozepam which is used as a sedative-hypnotic-anxiolytic. This substance is released, but in order to obtain it one needs a special prescription, while in the past in foreign cases it has been used as a “rape pill”.
However, according to Mr. Goulas, this is not the only substance. “Of course, there is also γ-hydroxybutyric acid, a substance that is not therapeutic itself and that is supplied illegally. That is, either through the internet, or through circuits “.
As side effects -according to the Aristotle professor- it causes what the victim mentioned. “That is, a suppression of the central nervous system, a weakening of resistance and in some cases can even cause an increase in erotic mood. However it makes man more vulnerable and weak to resist attacks. “But this is not the most worrying,” explains Mr. Goulas.
He adds that the most dangerous side effect that this substance can cause is retrograde amnesia. “That is, the person to whom it has been administered, to wake up and really remember nothing.”
Finally, the professor notes that the authorities may be faced with such a case for the first time, but abroad the problem is very big. “From 2000 onwards, incidents of rape combined with drug use have increased significantly abroad. In England, for example, they are a major issue and it is really a very big problem. “
