Coronavirus: The map of the extension of the Omicron subtype – What applies to tests and vaccines

by

Since the beginning of December, the Omicron sub-variation has started to spread in different countries of the world, mainly in Europe, at different speeds in each country depending on the prevailing factors.

Omicron subtype has been identified in Denmark, Greece (two cases in foreign countries so far), France, Norway, Britain, Sweden, Israel, India, Belgium and Singapore.

Indicative of the spread is that from 20% which was the percentage of new cases of Omicron 2 in Denmark at the end of December has reached 45%, ie almost half of the cases. In Norway, there were 7 cases on January 4, and now they have reached 611. In Britain, according to new data released on Friday, the cases of Omicron 2 have reached 426 from 53 on January 10, while in India According to local media, specifically in Calcutta, even 80% may belong to the sub-variation. From the beginning of December it spreads in different countries with different speed in each country depending on different factors.

Scientists are now investigating the transmissibility of the new variant and what happens to vaccines. British and Norwegian scientists estimate that it will probably be more contagious, but in Denmark and Israel they do not see much difference compared to Omicron, which was already highly contagious. However, all scientists believe that coronavirus vaccines will be just as effective in treating severe disease.

As for the tests, it is clarified that they normally detect if someone is positive, whether it is a molecular or a rapid test, however there were some molecular tests that were developed recently and could determine with great accuracy if a positive sample belonged to Omicron, but this is not the case with Omicron 2, and scientists will have to go through genomic analysis to see if a sample belongs to Omicron 2 or some other variant.
