WHERE: Europe may reach the end of the pandemic – 60 million Europeans infected by March

by

The Omicron variant, which is likely to affect 60 million Europeans by March, has formed a new phase for the Covid-19 pandemic in Europe, and is likely to bring it to an end, according to the director of the World Service Health Organization for Europe Hans Kluge.

“It is possible that the area is nearing the end of the pandemic,” said Hans Klugge, who called for caution because of the virus’ adaptability.

“Once the Omicron wave subsides, there will be total immunity for a few weeks and a few months, either because of the vaccine or because people have developed immunity because of the infection and also because of the fall due to seasonality,” said Hans Klugge.

However, we are not in “an endemic phase,” he warned.

“Endemic means (…) that we can predict what will happen. This (our) virus has surprised us more than once. “Therefore, we have to be cautious,” Hans Kluge insisted.

In the European Union and the European Economic Area, the Omicron, which appeared at the end of November and is more contagious than the Delta, is now dominant, according to the European Health Service.

With the launch of the cases, the issue now is “minimizing disturbances and protecting vulnerable people” and no longer focusing solely on reducing transmission.
