Thirty minutes of exercise five times a week reduces the risk of contracting and dying from a contagious disease by 37%, according to research from Glasgow Caledonian University.
At the same time, he found that those who exercised were 50% more likely to develop more antibodies during their vaccination.
The research was carried out in the early stages of the pandemic and thus did not deal directly with the coronavirus, but its findings are considered related to Covid-19 and its response.
According to the authors of the study, exercise protects against communicable diseases through three mechanisms:
– First, it protects against factors that increase the risk of serious illness and death. People who exercise are less likely to be overweight, or develop diabetes, respiratory and heart problems. Epidemiological studies have shown that coronavirus and other communicable respiratory diseases are more serious in people with these diseases.
Second, it reduces stress and chronic inflammation, thus reducing the chances of serious illness and death. Most deaths from coronavirus and pneumonia are the result of an over-inflammatory immune response.
Finally, the immune system is stronger if one exercises.
