Opinion – Julio Abramczyk: Political interference in health

by

A few days ago, the Secretary of the Science, Technology, Innovation and Strategic Health Inputs sector of the Ministry of Health did not accept the recommendation of experts representing medical entities and scientists.

They contraindicated the Covid kit, but Secretary Hélio Angotti Neto, on the contrary, defended not only the use of chloroquine, considered inappropriate by the scientific community, but also denied the benefits of applying vaccines, despite the various scientific studies published on them and the increased risk of hospitalization for unvaccinated people.

In the US, research led by Yilang Peng, from the University of Georgia, tried to show the role of ideologies in risk perception related to Covid. The study was published in the journal Risk Analysis.

The research found that people who adhered to libertarianism and anti-egalitarianism were more likely to despise the risks of Covid. These people are also likely to oppose government actions such as wearing face masks and giving vaccines. They are often opposed to government involvement in their private lives and economic activities.

These conclusions were based on an initial survey of 500 Americans, confirmed by another sample of 7,449 adults. The analyzes found political orientation and party identification in relation to the pandemic.

Peng explains that understanding the role of the components of a political ideology can help to understand the polarization of scientific issues in a population.
