Brazil breaks record with more than 286 thousand new cases of Covid in 24 hours

by

This Thursday (3), Brazil recorded 286,050 new cases and 917 deaths from Covid-19. The total number of infections in 24 hours remains high and has surpassed the highest mark recorded on January 28 – 257,239.

The moving average of infections reached 188,116 per day, an increase of 70.33%.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Brazil has lost 629,995 lives and infected 26,099,735 people.

Thus, 689 lives are lost per day, an increase of 193.19% compared to the data of two weeks ago.

According to Evaldo Stanislau de Araújo, an infectious disease specialist at Hospital das Clínicas de São Paulo, the increase in mortality was expected, because first the number of cases increases, then the number of hospitalizations and, finally, the number of deaths.

“There was a prediction from the University of Washington that now, in the month of February, we would start to have an increase in deaths, but not at the same level that we had previously”, he explains.

For the infectologist, there is a certain tendency towards stabilization and even a drop in the number of infected people – the record before this Thursday was last week.

“It is possible that for a few more days or weeks we will still live with a high number of deaths, which is always regrettable. But, after that, as the number of cases drops, consequently the deaths should also decrease.”

“In view of the high rate of contagion registered in the country, the death curve shows an upward trend. We will probably reach the sad mark of a thousand daily deaths again in the next few days, with the possibility of a fall in March”, says Wallace Casaca , coordinator of the SP Covid-19 Info Tracker platform, created by researchers from USP and Unesp with support from Fapesp to monitor the evolution of the pandemic.

“Cases also showed an increase, with daily records being surpassed every day. The expectation is that they will stabilize at a much higher level than that observed in the first and second waves of the disease, however, the curve tends to start its downward path even in February”, explains the specialist.

The country data, collected up to 8 pm, are the result of collaboration between leaf, UOL, O Estado de S. Paulo, Extra, O Globo and G1 to gather and disclose the numbers related to the new coronavirus pandemic. The information is collected by the consortium of press vehicles daily with the state Health Departments.

Vaccination data against Covid-19 was affected by the hacker attack on the Ministry of Health system, which took place in December, which led to the lack of updates in several states for long periods of time.

The consortium of press vehicles recently updated the Brazilian population numbers used to calculate the percentage of people vaccinated in the country. Now, the data used are the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) projection for 2022. All numbers are now calculated according to these values, including last year’s. Therefore, the percentages of people vaccinated may differ from the previously published figures.

Brazil registered 935,077 doses of vaccines against Covid-19, this Thursday. According to data from the state health departments, there were 241,770 first doses and 206,171 second doses. 3,491 single doses and 483,645 booster doses were also recorded.

In all, 166,031,141 people received at least the first dose of a vaccine against Covid in Brazil — 145,924,702 of them have already received the second dose of the immunizer. Added to the single doses of Janssen’s vaccine against Covid, there are already 150,625,718 people with both doses or with one dose of Janssen vaccine.

Thus, the country already has 77.29% of the population with the 1st dose and 70.11% of Brazilians with both doses or with one dose of the Janssen vaccine. Considering only the adult population, the values are, respectively, 102.63% and 93.11%.

The consortium also started recording the doses of vaccines given to children. The population aged 5 to 11 years partially immunized (with only the first dose of vaccine received) is 11.98%.

Considering the entire population over 5 years, 82.95% received one dose and 75.26% received two doses or Janssen’s single dose vaccine.

Even those who received both doses or one dose of the Janssen vaccine should maintain basic care, such as wearing a mask and social distancing, say experts.

The initiative of the consortium of press vehicles occurred in response to the attitudes of the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government, which threatened to withhold data, delayed newsletters about the disease and took information from the air, with the interruption of the disclosure of the totals of cases and deaths. In addition, the government has released conflicting data.
