One month after third dose of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine Its effectiveness is higher than both doses in preventing both Covid-19 infection and hospitalization because of it, according to a new US scientific study that confirms the importance of the booster dose against coronavirus.

Researchers at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in California, led by epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Tartoff, published in the medical journal The Lancet Regional Health-Americas, analyzed the medical records of 3.1 million people, of whom 197,535 ( 6.3%) had been infected with the coronavirus and of these, 15,786 (8%) had been admitted to hospital. The study covered the period up to December 2021, when the Omicron variant.

The effectiveness of both doses was found Pfizer against the risk of infection decreased from 85% during the first month after vaccination to 49% after eight months. The effectiveness of the two doses against the risk of hospitalization remained high (90%) throughout the eight months and did not weaken, with the exception of those over 75 years (reduction to 77%) or those who were immunosuppressed (74%).

THE effectiveness after three doses was clearly higher, 88% against the risk of infection and 97% against the risk of hospitalization within the first three months after the third dose.

“When we compare their effectiveness two doses t“With the three doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, we see that the benefit of the three doses outweighs the benefits of the two doses alone,” Tartoff said. “Our study shows that the positive impact on public health of the third dose, in terms of preventing serious illness, is significant. “All the studies, including ours, that have evaluated the effectiveness of the third dose of the vaccine, have shown a significant improvement.”
