WHERE: We probably see lower cases because there are fewer tests

by

A drop in test scores for Covid-19 may help reduce reported cases, although deaths are on the rise, World Health Organization’s epidemiologist Maria Van Kerko, who is in charge of pandemic pandemic management, said today.

“The biggest concern right now, I think, is the ever-increasing number of deaths,” Van Kerkov said during an online chat that was broadcast live on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.

“In the last week alone, almost 75,000 people have died, as we have been told, and we know this is an understatement,” he said.

Countries that say Covid-19 has spread across their territory two to six weeks ago have probably seen a drop in test rates, said Mike Ryan, the WHO’s chief emergency officer.

The WHO earlier this week urged governments to improve vaccination rates and faster antigen tests, as infections have increased since the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, especially in Eastern Europe.

Several countries have announced plans to ease restrictions on Covid-19 in the coming weeks if the daily number of infections continues to decline.

“Now is not the time for countries to change the isolation requirements for people who test positive for rapid antigen or molecular tests (PCR),” Ryan added.
