The positivity for covid-19 and influenza in the community is at low levels, according to the epidemiological report of the EODY on viral respiratory infections for the period 13-19 May. Particularly:
Influenza-like illness – ILI (regardless of pathogen)
The number of influenza cases per 1,000 visits showed a decrease compared to the previous week.
Severe Acute Respiratory Infection – SARI (regardless of pathogen)
The number of SARI cases per 1,000 visits remains low.
SARS-CoV2 virus – COVID-19 infection
The positivity in all tested samples remains low.
The number of new admissions was 117. The average weekly number of new admissions over the previous 4 weeks was 81 and the number of admissions in the corresponding week of 2023 was 636.
One new intubation was recorded. The average weekly number of new intubations over the previous 4 weeks was 2 and the number of intubations in the corresponding week of 2023 was 13.
The number of intubated patients with COVID-19 infection is 6.
The number of deaths was 2. The average weekly number of deaths in the previous 4 weeks was 4 and the number of deaths in the corresponding week in 2023 was 56.
The most frequent sub-variant of BA.2 remains JN.1.
Viral load surveillance in municipal wastewater showed a drop in SARS-CoV-2 circulation in 3 of the 9 areas tested, an increase in 4, and a stabilization in one.
Influenza virus
Influenza positivity in the community (sentinel network) was reduced to 10% (ECDC seasonal threshold of start/end of epidemic activity of influenza).
In the SARI network samples the positivity showed an increase.
No new serious case with ICU hospitalization was recorded, nor was there a new death from laboratory-confirmed influenza.
A total of 144 people with laboratory-confirmed influenza have been hospitalized in the ICU since the start of influenza surveillance, and 70 deaths from laboratory-confirmed influenza have been recorded.
Respiratory syncytial virus – RSV
Positivity in both the community (PHC Sentinel surveillance network) and hospitals (SARI surveillance network) remains low.
