Study: Johnson & Johnson less effective than Pfizer against hospitalization risk

The risk of hospitalization due to Covid-19 after vaccination with the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine is about five times higher than those vaccinated with the two doses of the Pfizer / NioNTech vaccine, according to a large French scientific study.

The researchers, who published the article in the American medical journal JAMA Network Open, according to Reuters, compared data on nearly 700,000 people who were vaccinated with J&J and as many with Pfizer. The average age of the subjects was 66 years. The study included almost the entire population over the age of 55 who had received the single-dose vaccine in France.

It was found that in the period of about two months after vaccination in the group of vaccinated with J&J there were 129 admissions to the hospital, while in the group of Pfizer only 23 (ie about one-fifth). The researchers estimated that the Pfizer vaccine was 92% effective against the risk of hospitalization, while the J&J vaccine was 59% effective.

The French scientists concluded that these findings support the recommendation that a second booster dose of mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna) should be given to those who had originally received the single-dose vaccine.

The researchers note that in the initial studies, the J&J vaccine was 85.4% effective against the serious Covid-19 and about 68% against the risk of hospitalization of the general population.
