At least 300 cholera deaths in Sudan, number estimated to be much higher
“Bell” for the reappearance of cholera, the World Health Organization rings. Since the beginning of the year, over 300,000 people have been ill with cholera and over 2,300 died from it, the General Director of the Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said characteristically.
The reaction of the world community is not the appropriate as it is affected by a critical shortage of vaccines. Demand continues to outstrip supply, with 105 million doses requested from 18 countries as of January 2023. Just 55 million doses have been produced in the same period, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.
On Friday the WHO warned of at least 300 deaths of cholera in the Sudan. It is estimated that the dead from cholera are much more, but there are long delays in updating the data due to the non-existent infrastructure.
The WHO is calling for further investment to increase vaccine production and is calling on all countries to invest in sanitation facilities as well as emergency preparedness to prevent further outbreaks of infection.
