Vaccination against mpox is not for the general population but for specific population groups at increased risk of exposure – See who they are
For the wider geographical coverage of vaccination needs against the mpox disease, six vaccination centers have been activated across the territory. Vaccination against the mpox virus does not concern the general population but specific population groups with an increased risk of exposure to the mpox virus, as mentioned in the recommendations for vaccination:
- Men who have sex with men (MSM), men who have sex with men and women, trans people, non-binary people. All people from the above groups are considered to be at increased risk if they have a recent history of multiple sexual partners, or have had a sexually transmitted disease in the last 3 months.
- Health and care professionals who work in places or in conditions with an increased risk of exposure to the mpox virus (e.g. laboratories, special units, vaccination centers, missions to areas with an increased risk of mpox infection, etc. ).
- People participating in humanitarian missions, people belonging to high-risk groups, people visiting relatives and friends who travel to regions of the countries affected (the list of regions of the countries is updated by EODY and is available on its website). Also, people who wish to be vaccinated for personal reasons as well as for special conditions (e.g. long stay in countries where cases of mpox are reported) and who are not included in the aforementioned categories.
- People who have been in close physical contact with a confirmed case of the mpox type virus, including people living in the same family environment. The vaccine should be given as soon as possible, preferably within 4 days of exposure. Vaccination up to 14 days after exposure is also recommended as it may provide protection. Vaccination is done only if the person in close contact with the case has not developed symptoms.
