Mônica Bergamo: Deaths by Covid among unvaccinated in SP is 26 times higher than in those already immunized

The number of deaths from Covid-19 among unvaccinated people in the state of São Paulo was 26 times higher than among people already fully immunized, reveals an unprecedented study by the São Paulo government carried out between December 5, 2021 and February 26, 2022 – period of explosion of cases of the disease in Brazil because of the ômicron variant.

The study analyzed 7,942 deaths entered by the 645 municipalities in the Sivep-Gripe system in these three months.

The number of deaths in the period among the 716,800 people from São Paulo who were not vaccinated reached 2,377. That is, 332 per 100 thousand inhabitants.

Among the 38.3 million who took the two doses – equivalent to 88.5% of the population of the state eligible for vaccination –, the deaths reached 4,903. That is, 13 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

The group of 2.9 million people from São Paulo who received just one dose of the vaccine was also more vulnerable: 662 died with a partial immunization schedule. Or 22 for every 100,000 inhabitants.

“It is further evidence of the importance of vaccination”, says the executive secretary of the State Department of Health, Eduardo Ribeiro Adriano. “People can choose between being in the most protected group, the vast majority among São Paulo residents, or among the most vulnerable”, he says.

“It is also a warning to those who have not yet taken the second dose of the vaccine: it is always time to complete your vaccination schedule”, he continues.

THE RIGHT

“Even with the circulation of a more transmissible variant, which is the case of the ômicron, the numbers prove that São Paulo made the right choice to bet on science and vaccination as the main measures to face the Covid-19 pandemic”, highlights the coordinator of the State Immunization Program (PEI), Regiane de Paula.

CROSS LINES

The secretariat will now correlate data from all deaths in the period to raise risk factors aggregated to cases that resulted in deaths – such as comorbidities and very old age, for example.

At the beginning of the year, period of prevalence of the omicron circulation, the number of daily cases of Covid-19 in the state rose from an average of 2,000 to a peak of 14,542. Hospital admissions jumped from a daily average of 718 in January to 1,521 at the height of the disease; the average number of deaths jumped from 22 to 272. In March, cases, hospitalizations and deaths began to slow down.
