Researchers have discovered a possible link between a diet of highly processed foods and chronic inflammation that increases the risk of colon cancer.
A possible link between a diet dominated by highly processed foods and unhealthy oils and chronic inflammation that leads to the development of colon cancer has been identified by researchers at the University of South Florida and the Tampa General Hospital Cancer Institute.
As explained in a relevant press release, Ganesh Chalandeassociate professor at the University of South Florida, our bodies are designed to actively resolve inflammation through bioactive lipid compounds derived from healthy fats we consume, such as avocados. Bioactive lipids are very small molecules that come from the foods we eat and when they come from processed foods, they directly disrupt the balance of the immune system and lead to chronic inflammation.
The research, the results of which were published online in the journal Gut, used a highly sensitive technique to detect traces of lipids in 162 tumor samples from patients at Tampa General Hospital. Inside the tumors the team observed an excess of molecules that promote inflammation and a lack of those that help resolve it and promote healing.
Besides, in previous studies of the same University, it was found that unhealthy diet also plays a role in other diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
“It is known that patients with an unhealthy diet have increased inflammation in their body. We’re now seeing this inflammation in the colon tumors themselves, and cancer is like a chronic wound that won’t heal—if your body lives on highly processed foods every day, its ability to heal that wound is diminished because of the inflammation and suppression. of the immune system that ultimately allows cancer to grow”explains o Timothy Getmanprofessor of surgery at the University of South Florida.
According to Getman, the findings underscore the urgent need to reevaluate the components of the Western diet, which typically consists of excessive consumption of added sugars, saturated fats, highly processed foods, chemicals and inflammatory seed oils.
The researchers also note that these findings pave the way for a new, natural approach, which has been named “resolution medicine” and concerns the restoration of balance in the patient’s diet for the most effective treatment of colon cancer. Such a diet focuses on reversing inflammation using healthy, unprocessed foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and fish oil derivatives, which along with balanced sleep and exercise help restore the body’s healing mechanisms.
