Deaths in the country, including deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic, decreased by 1,485 or by 1.4%. the first 44 weeks of this year (1/1/2024- 3/11/2024) and amounted to 106,097 (53,419 men and 52,678 women), while during the corresponding period of 2023 (2/1/2023- 5/11/2023) they had risen to 107,582 ( 54,500 men and 53,082 women).
A decrease of 3,433 deaths (3.1%) compared to the average of total deaths during the first 44 weeks of the years 2018-2023 (109,530 deaths). The corresponding percentages of change, per year, for the period 2018-2023 amount to -9.6% in 2023 compared to 2022 (119,021 deaths), to 0.7% in 2022 compared to 2021 (118,231 deaths), to 11.2% in 2021 compared to 2020 (106,359 deaths), to 0.8% in 2020 compared to 2019 (105,529 deaths) and to 5% in 2019 compared to 2018 (100,457 deaths).
According to her data ELSTATthe first 44 weeks of 2024 compared to the corresponding weeks of 2023, the most significant decreases are recorded on the 7th (12/2/2024- 18/2/2024), the 9th (26/2/2024- 3/3/ 2024) and the 8th week (19/2/2024- 25/2/2024), by 18.2%, 13.6% and 12.9% respectively. The most significant increases are recorded in the 24th (10/6/2024- 16/6/2024), the 32nd (5/8/2024- 11/8/2024) and the 33rd week (12/8/2024-18/8 /2024), by 15.6%, 12.7% and 12.1% respectively.
By age group of the deceasedthere is a decrease in deaths in 13 and an increase in 5 age groups, with the main decreases, in absolute terms, recorded for the age groups 85 to 89 years (770 deaths), 80 to 84 years (768 deaths) and 75 to 79 years (191 deaths). While the main increases are observed in the age groups over 90 years (339 deaths), 65 to 69 years (113 deaths) and 55 to 59 years (104 deaths).
By region of permanent residence of the deceaseda decrease in deaths is observed in 7 of the 13 regions of the country. The most significant reductions, in absolute terms, are recorded in the regions of Attica, Thessaly and Peloponnese by 728, 344 and 244 deaths respectively. While the most important increases are observed in the regions of North Aegean, Ionian Islands and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace by 92, 81 and 77 deaths respectively.
