The flu vaccination campaign will start in Brazil on April 4th. According to the Ministry of Health, 80 million doses of influenza vaccine will be distributed throughout the country.
The campaign will take place in two stages. The first, which takes place from April 4 to May 2, will include seniors aged 60 and over and health workers. Other groups will receive the vaccine in the second stage, which will take place from May 3 to June 3.
D-day of national mobilization is scheduled for April 30th. The campaign is expected to end on June 3.
According to the folder, vaccination against influenza aims to prevent the emergence of complications resulting from the disease and deaths, in addition to minimizing the burden of the disease, reducing symptoms in priority groups, which can be confused with those of Covid-19. It also aims to reduce the burden on health services.
The trivalent influenza vaccine used by the SUS is produced by the Butantan Institute. It is composed of the H1N1, strain B and H3N2 viruses, of the Darwin subtype. This subtype was responsible for the off-season flu epidemic that hit São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and other states in late 2021 and early 2022.
The Butantan Institute said in a note that it had already delivered 2 million doses to the Ministry of Health in February this year. The forecast is that 40 million will be delivered at the end of March and the other 40 million by the end of April.
Vaccines against Covid-19 can be administered simultaneously or with any interval with the other vaccines of the National Vaccination Calendar, in the population from 12 years old.
However, children aged 5 to 11 will have to wait a period of 15 days between the Covid and influenza vaccine. The priority is that this public first receive the vaccine against the new coronavirus.
The goal is to vaccinate 90% of the population in each group. In total, the ministry predicts that about 76.5 million people are part of the groups considered priority.
