US-CDC: Five times the number of infant hospitalizations under the Omicron variant

by

The number of infants up to 4 years old who were treated with Covid-19 during the Omicron variant wave was five times as high as the coronavirus Delta variant in the United States, according to a study by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

From 19 December 2021 to 19 February 2022, when the Omicron variant was predominant, the weekly index of related Covid-19 hospitalizations infants peaked at 14.5 per 100,000 children under 4 years. That number was almost five times that of the Delta variant (June to December 2021), according to the study from 14 US states.

Also noteworthy was the disproportionately large number of infant hospitalizations by Hispanic and African-American families (27.5% and 23.1%, respectively, during the Omicron variant wave). According to experts who spoke to the New York Times, the phenomenon is largely explained by the conditions of poverty and large families in which many of these children grow up.
