Almost 840,000 vaccines against Covid-19, which Kenya received through donations, are over, the Ministry of Health announced today, expressing its regret for the persistent distrust of the citizens towards the vaccine, as well as for the short life of the vaccines.
These are her vaccines AstraZeneca received through the Covax Global Initiative, the ministry said in a statement.
“Any dose that expires represents a missed opportunity to save a life,” he added.
About 30% of the eligible population in Kenya has been vaccinated against coronavirus, but vaccination has slowed significantly in recent weeks, which has seen the prevalence of the disease decline.
At the beginning of February, about 252,000 doses of Covid were given daily across the country, but that number has dropped to 30,000.
The ministry specifically said that the second dose had been significantly reduced and that some Kenyans were refusing certain vaccines – most notably AstraZeneca.
“We continue to observe reluctance towards vaccines attributed to rumors and misinformation, especially regarding fertility concerns,” the ministry said in a statement.
He also notes that these vaccines were delivered in January with an expiration date of 28 February.
“From now on, the Kenya will only accept donations of vaccines that have a lifespan of at least four months at the time of delivery “, the announcement continues.
Kenya has received a total of more than 27 million vaccines against Covid-19, but has only given about 17.3 million.
The ministry confirms that it has many vaccines in stock and calls on Kenyans to be vaccinated to avoid further losses.
The government plans to double the vaccination of 27 million Kenyans by the end of the year, but only 8 million doses have been reached so far.
About 5,650 people have died from coronavirus in Kenya since the first case was diagnosed in March 2020, according to official figures.
In March, the government announced a relaxation of some anti-virus measures, including the end of the obligation to use a mask in public places.
