Research has found that the administration of vitamin D helps to maintain telomere, protective covers at the ends of the chromosomes, which are cut during aging and are associated with the development of certain diseases.
Telomeres consist of repeated DNA sequences or base pairs, which prevent chromosome ends from deteriorating or merged with other chromosomes. Telomere shrinkage is a natural process of aging and is associated with an increased risk of various age -related diseases.
The study
The survey was attended by women aged 55 and older and men aged 50 and older in the US for five years.
In 1,054 of the participants, the length of the telomeres in white blood cells were assessed at the start, the second and the fourth year.
Compared to taking placebo, taking vitamin D3 supplements (2,000 IU/day) significantly reduced telomere shrinkage over a four -year period, preventing almost three years of aging compared to placebo. It was also administered with 3 fatty acid omega (1 g/day), which, however, had no significant effect on the length of telomeres during monitoring.
