Opinion – Marcelo Leite: Science imitates art displayed in Inhotim

The concept of biomimethism encourages researchers to carefully observe certain findings of nature to inspire innovations. Velcro is a well-known case, suggested as it was by hair in the lizard paws that walk on the top end on the ceiling. There is more originality to consider, however, as works of art.

It was by chance – or destination, others would say that I became aware of an imitated nanostructure, see, of an impactful artistic installation in Inhotim. For those who do not know this incredible mix of contemporary art museum with botanical garden in Minas Gerais, is the tip.

It is a miracle. As unlikely as a flying saucer full of wonders downloaded in Brumadinho, Inhotim landed there. The longer the person takes a long time to visit him, the less time will have to contemplate the series of pavilions and outdoor pieces (I returned for the fourth time to know the space of Claudia Andujar).

At the top of a hill is such an impactful work. This adjective has nothing random. The work of Chris Burden (1946-2015) is called “Beam Drop”. In 2008 he ordered the release of 71 steel beams over a newly practiced cement pool of a height of 45 m, with the aid of a crane. Read more (06/01/2025 – 08h30)
