The Ministry of Health will reduce the interval for applying the booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine from six to five months.
The decision will be announced on Tuesday (16), in a statement to the press. The folder will also hold an event on Saturday (20) of mass vaccination. The idea is to prioritize the immunization of people with overdue doses.
Since the end of September, the Ministry of Health has indicated the application of the booster dose to people over 60 years of age, in addition to members of risk groups, such as patients undergoing chemotherapy, immunodeficiency, people living with HIV/AIDS, among others cases.
With the change of orientation, the doses are applied five months after the end of the basic vaccination schedule, that is, after the second application of the Pfizer, Coronavac and AstraZeneca vaccines. Or after an application of the Janssen model, which is administered in a single dose.
The interval is only shorter for those with a high degree of immunosuppression. In these cases, the booster vaccine must be applied 28 days after the last dose of the basic regimen.
The Ministry of Health guidelines on the vaccination campaign serve to guide states and municipalities, but there is no obligation to follow the federal government. Santa Catarina, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul and some municipalities have already anticipated the change and reduced the interval to apply the booster dose from six to five months.
Next Saturday, the Ministry of Health will promote events in several cities to look for those who have overdue doses for Covid. The campaign will be called “megavaccination”, according to government officials.
Brazil has 58.9% of the population with the 1st complete vaccination cycle. About 75.7% of the population received at least one dose. The data are from the consortium formed by the vehicles sheet, Uol, O Estado de S. Paulo, Extra, o Globo and G1.
The government estimates that 11.2 million people received the booster dose.
The Ministry of Health is already planning the 2022 vaccination campaign. Immunization of children is in the government’s plans, despite President Jair Bolsonaro (non-party) distorting data on the safety and effectiveness of vaccines to discourage the campaign.
The government prioritizes purchasing doses of Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines for next year’s anti-Covid campaign. The idea is to use around 340 million doses. For this, it would use 134.9 million vaccines that would be left over from 2021.
