Two outbreaks scabies were detected in High school in Tuba Thessaloniki. His address school immediately informed the parents of the students and the relevant health services, while following the instructions for the implementation of the protocol EODY.
According to the instructions, there is no closure of the school, but intensive cleaning of the smooth surfaces and avoiding close physical and skin contact between members of the school community.
As mentioned by regional director of education for Central Macedonia, Alexandros Koptsis, “There is no reason to worry. Such cases occur every year. The parents were informed and the protocol of the EODY is applied”.
According to EODY, transmission of scabies it is mainly done with direct skin-to-skin contact with a person who is already infected or through contaminated objects. In simple scabies, contact must be close and prolonged for there to be a risk of transmission.
Brief handshakes or hugs are not enough for transmission, while prolonged skin-to-skin contact, such as holding hands for several minutes, increases the risk. Also, transmission can be caused by sharing contaminated clothes, towels or bedding.
The most common symptoms of scabies are severe itching, especially at night, and skin lesions, such as red papules. Lesions usually appear between the fingers, wrists, elbows, armpits, nipples, genital and lumbar region, between the shoulder blades, abdomen, buttocks and knees.
Symptoms usually appear 2-6 weeks after infection, and up to 8 weeks in some cases. During this time, the person can spread the scabies even without obvious symptoms.
The contagious period lasts until the parasites and eggs are destroyed, usually 24 hours after the first treatment. The treatment is done with the local use of anti-psoriasis parasiticide preparations.
The scabies mite does not survive outside the human body for more than three days. In addition, it dies if exposed to a temperature above 50°C for 10 minutes.
