Lamia General Hospital was visited in the afternoon by the Minister of HealthAdonis Georgiadisconducting an autopsy in the clinics and meetings with management and workers. The main subject of the visit was the operation of the new beds in the Intensive Care Unit, which is significantly strengthened, as the 8 functional beds that existed until now are now increased to 14.

This reinforcement became possible after staffing the ICU with additional staff and thus the 6 beds that existed from 2021 and had operated during the pandemic now complete the ICU and increase its capacity. With the new provision, as pointed out, the continuous and organized provision of intensive care to more patients is allowed, covering the needs of a large geographical area.

The Minister of Health also referred to the ongoing works for the construction, completion with staff and mechanical equipment of the Oncology Unit being built in Lamia hospital. As he stated, the goal is for the unit to be operational in March 2026, offering critical services to oncology patients in Central Greece, who until now have been forced to travel to large cities.

In a meeting with employee representatives, Mr. Georgiadis emphasized that a systematic effort is being made to strengthen the medical and nursing workforce, pointing out that “the samples are now positive, as participation in the announcements is increasing and vacant positions are gradually being filled”. At the same time, he announced that a new announcement is expected by the end of the year to cover additional needs.

“The Lamia Hospital has a pivotal role, as it serves an extensive area and is located between two large urban centers. It must be strong and adequately staffed”, noted the Minister, underlining the importance of the proper functioning of the Oncology Unit and intensive care facilities.

For his part, the Governor of the 5th Health Region, Fotis Seretis, stated that “the response of specialized doctors to the latest announcements is significantly better than in the past”, stressing that “the negative climate is overturning and the Lamia hospital is becoming more attractive to the medical staff”. He also underlined that previously there were announcements for over 100 positions, but only 25 were filled, estimating that “the image is improving thanks to the cooperation of management and staff.”
