Covid-19 lower risk for those who wear glasses, according to a British study

by

People who wear glasses often have a slightly lower risk of Covid-19 infection, while contact lenses do not provide any additional protection, according to one great British scientific studywhich highlights the importance of the eyes as the entry of the coronavirus into the body.

The researchers, led by Dr. Andrew Hayworth of the Institute of Epidemiology at University College London (UCL), who did the pre-publication on medRxiv, according to Reuters, analyzed data on 19,166 people. Taking into account other risk factors, the analysis concluded that there is a 15% lower risk of coronavirus infection for those who always wear glasses, compared to those who never wear them.

The protective effect of the glasses is reduced in those who stated that the glasses prevent them from wearing the mask well, while no protective benefit was found for those who regularly use contact lenses.

Respiratory viruses, such as the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, can also infect the eyes by using them as a gateway to humans. It is unclear to what extent infections occur through this route.
