The risk of intubation for triple vaccinated people is nine times lower

by

The risk of intubation of vaccinated and with the booster (3rd) dose compared to Covid-19 is approximately 9-fold lower than those who have not been vaccinated, while the risk of death is approximately 6-fold lower, confirming the effectiveness of the vaccine against serious risks from Covid-19.

The above clarification, which is confirmed by the latest data covering the period of prevalence of the Omicron variant in Greece, is considered necessary in order to interpret correctly and with scientific accuracy the data regarding the percentages of vaccinated and unvaccinated patients treated by intubation, were announced during the daily epidemiological surveillance report for Covid-19 on 7 April.

In particular, in the relevant report on that day it was announced that among the 359 intubated patients, 207 (57.66%) were unvaccinated or partially vaccinated and 152 patients (42.34%) were fully vaccinated.

Regarding the effectiveness of vaccination based on these data, it is clarified that since the vaccination coverage of the general population has increased significantly, it is expected that the percentage of vaccinated between cases, intubation and deaths has increased, as it has decreased. significantly the number of unvaccinated in the general population. At the same time, account must be taken of the high transmissibility of the Omicron variant, which is fully prevalent in the country, and its immune escape characteristics, ie its ability to infect individuals who have been vaccinated or previously infected with other variants of the virus.

For this reason, it is not scientifically correct to evaluate the effectiveness of the vaccine based on only the general percentage of vaccinated patients in the intubated category. Efficacy is determined by the proportion of intubated to vaccinated compared to the corresponding proportion for unvaccinated. The effectiveness of the vaccine for the categories of infections and deaths is evaluated accordingly.

Specifically, according to the data for the period from 20/12/2021 to 20/02/2022, which covers the period of prevalence of the Omicron variant in our country, the vaccination with booster (3rd) dose is effective and offers protection by 61 % against infection, 89% against intubation and 84% against death. Regarding the protection provided by the vaccine, this translates as follows: the relative risk for vaccinated people is about 6 times lower for death than for unvaccinated people, and about 9 times lower for intubation.
