Psaltopoulou in SKAI for hepatitis: We can not predict in which children it will appear -What should parents do

by

“Everything that is unknown is worrying“, Said the Epidemiologist Dora Psaltopoulou speaking in SKAI for cases of acute hepatitis in children. The professor explained that it does not concern the hepatitis A, B, C, D and E viruses and mainly concerns children 2-5 years old but also up to 16 years old.

“We can not predict which children it will appear in,” he stressed and advised the parents take care of children’s hygiene. “Wash their hands and do not come into contact with people who have gastrointestinal symptoms or viral infections.”

He also pointed out that parents should not give any treatment, but go to the doctor.

Children who are sick with hepatitis show a series of symptoms mainly yellowing of the eyes or skinsaid Ms. Psaltopoulou.

Regarding the correlation with the coronavirus, he said that there are several cases. One hypothesis is that the children had recently passed on coronavirus resulting in a weaker immune system. Another hypothesis, which was also mentioned by Ms. Papaevangelou, is that the children, because they have been protected for so long, have not come in contact with a series of viruses with much milder symptoms.

Regarding the possibility of a liver transplant, Ms. Psaltopoulou said that the number of cases diagnosed internationally is about 180, so there is no extensive record, while the transplants that were performed mainly concerned cases of Great Britain. Transplantation is done when the condition of the liver can no longer be improved with treatments.
