Opinion – Pedro Hallal: The future of science in Brazil

by

Every four years, every time an electoral process approaches, politicians tend to remember the things that really matter in people’s lives. They often propose miraculous solutions to complex problems such as health, security, unemployment, economy, education, among others. This year’s elections will be no different.

Those responsible for the fact that Brazil has a mortality from Covid-19 five times higher than the world average will pretend that it is not their fault and will present miraculous proposals to take care of the health of the Brazilian people. Even after they denied the pandemic and mocked the patients’ shortness of breath.

Gun advocates will lie that they are concerned about our safety. And, on the day that Brazil starts to live with school shootings, they will pretend they have nothing to do with it.

Those to blame for the fact that Brazil has one of the highest unemployment rates in its recent history will pretend that it is the fault of others and present miraculous proposals to generate jobs for all the unemployed.

Those responsible for making us relive the specter of inflation, which has broken all records since the implementation of the real plan, will come up with brilliant solutions to end inflation in Brazil. The same people who devalued the real and made everything expensive will lie to us that prices will fall and that the economy will take off.

Those responsible for the biggest educational crisis in our history, which cut Brazilian education funds, and generated the biggest corruption scandal in the history of the Ministry of Education, will lie that education will be a priority from now on.

But no area will face such a watershed in this election as science. While the opposition candidates will be defending science, the situation candidate will be on the other side, defending darkness, criminalizing scientists, defending censorship, insisting on conspiracy theories that only serve as a smokescreen to hide corruption schemes, purchases inexplicable things ranging from condensed milk to Viagra, jet ski and motorcycle rides, and an unprecedented incompetence in the country’s history.

The 2022 elections will place, on opposite sides, those who recognize that the earth is spherical and those who insist on flat earth.

The 2022 elections will separate those who believe in and invest in vaccines from those who deny immunizations and hope for side effects.

The 2022 elections will divide university supporters and those who attack them.

The 2022 elections will bring us closer or further away from seeing a Brazilian scientist finally win a Nobel Prize.

The 2022 elections will make it easier or harder for the poor to continue to have access to universities.

What is at stake is the future of Brazilian science. There is no middle ground: either we choose science or we choose barbarism.
