The surgical robot is an important and valuable tool that facilitates its work, especially in cases with increased demands and creates the conditions for more painless operations.
On the occasion of two cases that underwent left colectomy for cationic colon cancer, in elderly patients, recently performed by the surgical team of the 2nd Clinic of Robotic Surgery and Surgical Oncology of Metropolitan General, Mrs. Eleni Karafyroukos – Bavrou Divria Ch. Clinical Robotic Surgery and Surgical Oncology Metropolitan General, explains the benefits and capabilities of the Da Vinci Xi Robotic System that makes it possible and with excellent results for cancer surgeries in the elderly.
“Surgeries in elderly patients require specialized treatment by well-structured teams with the participation of doctors from many specialties. The cases involved an 86-year-old man with a history of right pneumonectomy for lung cancer combined with severe heart problems and an 82-year-old woman with a history of two open abdominal surgeries and also significant heart problems. Minimally invasive surgery was chosen to treat colon cancer, due to the multiple advantages of the method, which is especially evident in old age. The Da Vinci robotic system minimizes the possibility of turning the surgery into an open operation, while due to its special technical characteristics it gives the optimal surgical and oncological result.
The good surgical result depends on the appropriate preoperative assessment and the good and coordinated operation of the team and each of its members individually. Everyone’s role is important and unique. “Everyone must work independently but also in perfect coordination with each other, while the highest degree of training of everyone in their subject is required”, says the doctor.
The surgical robot is designed to further increase the surgeon’s capabilities, allowing him to operate with great precision, flexibility and complete control, thus minimizing postoperative pain and the possibility of postoperative complications. The minimally traumatic procedure achieves the rapid and painless mobilization of the elderly patients, which is of major importance for the development of their postoperative course.
“The application of new technologies in modern surgical practice, in combination with the spectacular development of all the medical specialties involved, have made cancer surgeries possible and safe, in the elderly with multiple concomitant problems. “This group of patients, in the past, were often deprived of surgery due to increased risk”, the surgeon concludes.
