Mayor Bruno Covas (1980-2021) received tributes this Monday (16), during the inauguration of a high-tech center for cancer diagnosis and intervention that bears the name of the politician, who died of cancer exactly one year ago. The unit belongs to the Municipal Hospital Dr. Gilson de Cássia Marques de Carvalho, in Vila Santa Catarina, south of São Paulo.
The ceremony was attended by Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and Governor Rodrigo Garcia (PSDB), who signed a transfer of R$ 17 million. Gustavo Covas, brother of the former mayor, and his uncle, former councilor Mário Covas Neto, were also present.
Tomás Covas, 16, son of Bruno Covas and who lives in New York, followed the event virtually and had his speech broadcast on a big screen. “Today is a difficult day, but I have no doubt that my father is proud, as the main objective of his management was health,” he said.
“The inauguration of this center is our tribute to him,” said Nunes, who cried in his speech. “I did some psychological preparation, but I couldn’t.”

Covas underwent cancer treatment at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, which manages the municipal hospital — also known as Vila Santa Catarina — and which donated a R$ 7 million robot to perform oncological and bariatric surgeries.
“Diagnoses that still cannot be made here, due to delays in importing equipment, will be carried out on the Einstein network”, said Sidney Klajner, digestive system surgeon and president of Einstein.
To operate the robot, the team underwent training at the central unit of the private hospital, in the Morumbi neighborhood, in the west zone. On site, there is a platform with 12 robots, three of them for training. According to Klajner, the network invested BRL 46 million between 2008 and 2018 in the robotic platform.
According to the city hall, with the inauguration of the cancer center in the hospital’s high-complexity structure, the city will be able to comply with federal legislation to start cancer treatment within 60 days.
According to the municipal secretary of Health, Carlos Zamarco, the high-tech center has goals of treating 300 new cases per month (totaling 10,000 consultations), performing 8,000 imaging exams and performing 450 monthly surgeries, in addition to having a high-quality pharmacy. cost.
The oncology center has 23 offices and 115 beds for clinical hospitalization and oncology surgery, in addition to 40 beds for the ICU.
