The decommissioning activities carried out by the teams in charge of piloting the mission made it possible to position the satellite in good safety conditions.

In 2012, the satellite was renamed Eutelsat 5 West A and operated in an inclined orbit since the end of 2019, which has extended its lifetime in orbit.
In January 2020, the gradual migration of services to the new Eutelsat 5 West B satellite, as well as to other satellites in the Eutelsat fleet, began in order to be able to guarantee customers seamless continuity of services.

Eutelsat 5 West A has encouraged the transition to digital television, particularly in France where, in the early 2000s, analog television gave way to digital transmission technology.
Eva Berneke, Chief Executive Officer of Eutelsat, said: ‘The overall satellite service availability has reached 99.999%, which is a testament to the tremendous work and commitment of all Eutelsat teams who have worked together over the years to carry out this mission. ‘
