PARIS (Reuters) – A very large majority of Parisians voted against the use of self-service electric scooters in the capital on Sunday in an advisory vote organized by the town hall, which pledged to implement the result.
Nearly 90% of voters who came to the polling stations set up for this vote voted in favor of a ban, the town hall said.
Electric scooters accessible by smartphone via apps arrived in the French capital in 2018. The town hall tried to regulate their use in 2020, limiting the number of approved operators to three (Lime, Dott and Tier).
The mayor, Anne Hidalgo, as well as her deputy in charge of mobility, David Belliard, had declared themselves opposed to the extension of the contract of these operators, which should not be renewed in September.
On Twitter, David Belliard justified his opposition to self-service scooters, citing their dangerousness – 3 dead and 459 injured in 2022 in Paris according to the police headquarters -, the congestion of public space and their very short lifespan. and not environmentally friendly.
