(News Bulletin 247) – Rio Tinto has completed the transition of its heavy machinery from fossil diesel to renewable diesel at its site in Boron, California, making US Borax the first surface mine in the world to cross this step.
Switching to renewable diesel is expected to reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by 45,000 tonnes per year, equivalent to eliminating annual emissions from around 9,600 cars.
Sinead Kaufman, CEO of Rio Tinto Minerals, said: ‘This transition is an important first step and will undoubtedly lead to further opportunities to decarbonise our global operations.’
Rio Tinto US Borax worked with Rolls-Royce, Neste, the Environmental Protection Agency and the State of California to fully transition its on-site heavy machinery fleet to renewable diesel by the end of May 2023.
This conversion to renewable diesel supports Rio Tinto’s global decarbonization goals, which include a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, and a commitment to reach net zero by 2050.
