BERLIN (Reuters) – Preliminary data on consumer price developments in five federal states in June point to an acceleration in inflation in Germany.
In North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous Land in the country and which often reflects the national trend, the consumer price index rose by 6.2% over one year, against 5.7% in May, according to data released Thursday.
The inflation rate also reached 6.2% in Bavaria (after 6.1%), 6.7% in Brandenburg (after 6.3%), 6.1% in Hesse (after 5.9%) and 6.9% in Baden-Württemberg (after 6.6%).
Although not harmonized with European standards, they show an upward trend.
Preliminary national inflation figures are due at 12:00 GMT and economists polled by Reuters were predicting – before the release of regional figures – a rise of 6.3% year on year, from 6.1% a month earlier.
The expected acceleration compared to June 2022 is explained by a base effect linked to the fall in prices last year, following government support measures.
