(News Bulletin 247) – Eni yesterday presented a document entitled ‘The road to net zero. Decarbonizing the maritime sector ‘ carried out in collaboration with several companies in the sector.

‘The contributors have supervised the work of 40 experts who have been working together since last March to come up with a common strategy’, says Eni.
Result? The publication of a strategic orientation document.
The finding? With over 100,000 merchant ships transporting 12 billion tonnes of cargo annually around the world, the maritime sector is the backbone of the global economy.

While 90% of goods are transported by sea, the sector is estimated to account for around 3% of all global greenhouse gas emissions.

‘The sector needs short, medium and long-term solutions compatible with economic trends in order to gradually achieve zero CO2 emissions’, emphasizes Eni.

In this context, in the short and medium term, biofuels appear as a solution and Eni makes it known that ‘engine manufacturers are ready to develop tailor-made solutions for different types of fuel’.

“The maritime sector is crucial for Italy’s competitiveness and also for experimenting with technologies that enable carbon neutrality by adopting solutions that pursue our objective of enabling a just transition, in three dimensions. : environment, economy and society”, indicates Giuseppe Ricci, director of operations for Energy Evolution at Eni who intends to “promote mature solutions such as biofuels” and “test longer-term solutions”.
