(News Bulletin 247) – Following the fine imposed on it yesterday by the Spanish competition authority (CNMC), Amazon expressed this morning its ‘disagreement’ and announced an upcoming appeal of this decision.
“We also dispute the idea suggested by the authority that Amazon would benefit from excluding seller partners from its stores. Our business model is built on the success of vendor partners, most of whom are small businesses,” said a company spokesperson.
‘Furthermore, as a result of the agreement with Apple, our customers in Spain benefit from a product selection that has more than doubled over the past 4 years, with high quality offers and fast delivery’, he added.
As a reminder, the CNMC announced yesterday that it had imposed a fine of 194 million on Apple and Amazon for having restricted competition on the Amazon site in Spain.
According to the CNMC, the two companies had agreed to include a series of clauses in the contracts that govern the terms of sale of Apple products.
These measures have “unreasonably limited the number of resellers of Apple products on the Amazon site in Spain”, affecting third-party resellers, estimates the CNMC.
