(News Bulletin 247) – Lockheed Martin announces that the US Space Development Agency (SDA) has awarded it an $816 million contract to build 36 Beta satellites for ‘Tranche 2 Transport’ (T2TL).
The T2TL is part of an overall plan to strengthen deterrence with more resilient space-based architectures for targeting beyond line of sight (BLOS), data transport, and advanced missile detection and tracking.
The T2TL Beta variant satellites will operate in tandem with SDA’s Tranche 1 and Tranche 2 networks.
“Tranche 2 will dramatically improve the capabilities of our warfighters and establish new levels of resiliency, connectivity and orbital diversity needed to counter future threats,” said Joe Rickers, vice president of secure communications at Lockheed Martin. ‘
T2TL Beta will consist of 72 satellites and will be deployed into orbit in a series of launches starting in 2026 and will undergo a continuous process of verification and commissioning before it goes into operation.
