KYIV (Reuters) – Britain will guarantee a 192 million pound (225 million euro) export finance deal to allow Ukraine to buy nuclear fuel, including from British producers, announced British Energy Minister Grant Shapps during a trip to Kyiv.
Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was badly damaged in Russian strikes last winter.
Ukraine now relies increasingly on its aging nuclear power plants, which supplied about half of the country’s electricity before the war.
“The guarantee we are going to provide is intended to help Ukraine ensure that its nuclear fuel does not have to go through Russia in the future,” Grant Shapps told Reuters.
“This funding will ensure that (nuclear fuel) comes from much safer sources.”
Grant Shapps said one such fuel source would be UK-based uranium enrichment specialist Urenco.
