(News Bulletin 247) – The Volkswagen group announced on Thursday a reorganization of its semiconductor supply activities, with the adoption of a new strategy in the purchase of its electronic components.
Instead of appealing to automotive suppliers, as it used to do so far, the German manufacturer now intends to acquire chips directly from manufacturers, particularly for parts considered to be the most strategic.
The group explains that it is a question of ensuring the supply of sufficient stocks over the long term, avoiding new supply difficulties and the appearance of bottlenecks, and thus guaranteeing its technological competitiveness. .
While in 1978, a Porsche 911 included only eight semiconductors, a model of Skoda Enyaq today embeds some 8000 electronic components.
The automotive sector, which today represents the fifth largest market for the semiconductor industry with a market of 47 billion dollars in total, is expected to become the third customer by 2030 with sales of 147 billion. .
