PARIS (Reuters) – Eramet announced on Wednesday the resumption in the evening in Gabon of its rail freight activity and that on Thursday morning of its manganese production, after having suspended them in the morning due to a coup d’etat.
The French mining group adds in a press release that the circulation of passenger trains remains suspended until further notice.
A group of Gabonese army officers announced on Wednesday that they had seized power and placed President Ali Bongo under house arrest, following the announcement of the latter’s election victory for a third term.
“Given the information available this evening on the current events in Gabon, the group has decided to immediately restart rail transport and resume mining activities tomorrow morning, Thursday August 31,” said Eramet.
“The group continues to closely monitor developments and will keep the market informed. In total, production at the Moanda mine will have been halted for 24 hours and rail transport for 18 hours,” he said. added, recalling that it employed more than 8,700 people in Gabon, through its Comilog and Setrag subsidiaries, including employees and subcontractors.
After the announcement of the suspension of its activities in Gabon, Eramet saw its stock plummet on the stock market, closing down 16.54%.
