MADRID (Reuters) – Workers at an Amazon logistics center in northern Spain are planning a three-day strike before Epiphany on Jan. 6, when Spanish children receive their Christmas presents, according to the LAB union.

About 160 workers at the Trapagaran center in the Basque Country plan to strike on Jan. 3, 4 and 5 to demand higher wages, said Gotzon Mardarats, leader of the LAB union, which represents most of the employees.

The center processes parcels for the Basque Country as well as the regions of Burgos and Cantabria.

“We want salary increases in line with inflation. Increases higher than the 3% annually planned until 2025,” said Gotzon Mardarats.

Asked by Reuters, Amazon said employees at its Trapagaran center “have competitive salaries and benefits.”

The January strike threat follows a similar movement that began at midnight Saturday and will continue until Monday.

About 90% of the center’s employees stopped working, delaying the delivery of around 20,000 packages, according to the union leader.

In Spain, it is common for children to receive gifts on the Christian holiday of Epiphany, January 6, rather than on Boxing Day.
