BERLIN (Reuters) – Three German nationals suspected of collusion with Chinese intelligence services were arrested on Monday in western Germany, prosecutors said in a statement.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said the government was monitoring what she called a significant threat posed by Chinese espionage in areas of commerce, industry and science.

“We are looking very closely at these risks and threats and we have clearly warned and raised awareness about this so that protective measures are strengthened everywhere,” she said in a statement, adding that the issue innovative German technologies that could be used for military purposes was “particularly sensitive”.

Prosecutors identified the suspects as Herwig F. and Ina F., a married couple who run a business in Düsseldorf, and Thomas R., whom prosecutors described as an agent of China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS). ). He was arrested in Bad Homburg.
