(Reuters) – The New York Stock Exchange ended higher on Tuesday, with some large caps posting gains in a shortened session before the Christmas break.
The Dow Jones index gained 0.91%, or 390.51 points, to 43,297.46 points. The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 gained 66.00 points, or 1.10% to 6,040.07 points. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 266.24 points, or 1.35% to 20,031.126 points.
While large caps exert considerable influence over the markets, their performance often affects indexes.
This effect is even more pronounced in the absence of other catalysts and when trading volumes are low.
Trading on US markets stopped at 18:00 GMT and Wall Street will be closed on Wednesday.
Tesla rose, posting the best performance in the consumer discretionary sector index.
Semiconductor makers were also on the rise. Broadcom and Nvidia advanced and Arm Holdings regained some ground after falling back in the previous session.
Cryptocurrency-related stocks like Microstrategy, Riot Platforms, and MARA Holdings all rose, driven by the rise in bitcoin.
