Zurich (Reuters) – Siemens will delete 5,600 jobs in its flagship digitalization of industrial automation, the German engineering company announced on Tuesday, specifying that it adjusted its production capacity according to the weakness of the demand.

“The weakness of demand, mainly on the key markets of China and Germany, associated with increased competitive pressures, has considerably reduced orders and revenues in the industrial automation sector” in the last two years, the group said.

According to Siemens, global demand for automation technologies should remain intact in the long term, but the company had to adjust its production capacity according to market conditions.

Siemens had warned in November on the possibility of deleting jobs in this area. During the last quarter, the group reported a sharp drop in sales and the benefit of the division, due to the difficulties encountered by Germany, China and Italy.

“Digital Industries” employs around 68,000 people worldwide, including 2,600 in Germany.

Siemens also announced the abolition of around 450 jobs in its electric vehicle recharge activity.
