(BFM Stock Exchange) – The French State gains two places in the 2023 classification of the most important shareholders of CAC 40 companies in 2023 established by Euronext, thanks to the development of aeronautical values.
The French state has risen to fourth place in the main shareholders of companies in the star index CAC 40 of the Paris Stock Exchange in 2023, behind the three families at the head of luxury groups LVMH, Hermès and L’Oréal, according to a study by Euronext published on Tuesday.
As in previous years, three families make up the top 3 main CAC 40 business holders: the Arnault family (LVMH group) holds 7.3% of the total, the 5.5% Hermès family and the Bettencourt-Meyers (L’Oréal) 3.4%.
Notable fact in 2023, “The Pinault family”, which holds Kering, “came out of the top 10” of the largest shareholders in CAC 40 in 2023, underlines Mathieu Caron, in charge of the primary markets of the Euronext stock market operator. In 2023, Kering had a 16% drop in the value of his title.
Recall that the star index of the Paris Stock Exchange signed a beautiful 2023 vintage, signing an increase of 16.5% that year.
At the foot of the podium
Just at the foot of the podium arrives the French state, shareholder of 20 of the 40 companies in the CAC 40, with 2.5% of the value of the index shares in 2023 against 2.2% in 2022.
The French state wins “two places” compared to 2022, “carried by the values of defense and aerospace”, comments Mathieu Caron.
In 2023, the engine manufacturer Safran, whose French state holds just over 11% of the capital, increased by 36.38%.

This increase allows him to pass the American giants of asset management Vanguard (which holds 2.4% of CAC 40 shareholding) and BlackRock (2.2%).
In total, asset managers represented 25.2%of CAC 40 shareholding in 2023, large family groups 21.2%, and private investors 5.4%, according to the annual Euronext study on CAC 40 shareholding.
