Milan (Reuters) – Stellantis and the unions have agreed with an agreement for the voluntary departure of 350 employees in the Pomigliano and Pratola Serra factories in southern Italy, the Fiom union said on Wednesday.
A Stellantis spokesman said that the layoffs concerned employees close to the retirement age and were part of the plans presented in December to the Italian government to stimulate production in the country.
Fiom, who did not sign the agreement with the automaker, said in a press release that voluntary departures concerned 300 workers from the Pomigliano assembly plant and 50 workers from the Pratola Serra engines factory.
Last month, Stellantis indicated that 114 young workers benefiting from temporary contracts in its Italian factory of utility vehicles in Atessa, in central Italy, would be hired on a permanent basis.
Voluntary layoffs represent the main tool used by Stellantis to reduce its workforce in Italy, which today amount to some 38,000 people, compared to around 55,000 at the beginning of 2021, when the group was formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and the manufacturer of Peugeot PSA.
