To convince the Court that it was a medical error, and that it was not had no murderous intent, The 43-year-old specialized vascular surgeon who is accused of killing his 36-year-old patient will attempt an attempt at the Court of Appeals in April 2017 inside the Hippocratic Hospital of Thessaloniki. The doctor was sentenced at first instance to life imprisonment and an additional two years in prison, as he was found guilty of “homicide committed by omission, with possible deceit” and “insulting the dead”.

He gave a sample of the defensive line that will follow on the first day of the trial that is being conducted before the Mixed Jury Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki. Asked to comment on the (basic) accusation, he said: “It was a tragic medical error, for which I am very sorry. “I had no intention of killing her.”

The evidentiary process started with the examination of the mother of the deceased, who, from the step of the witness, stressed that her daughter was perfectly healthy. “But he had a big problem with varicose veins,” he added, which is why, as he said, he went to a doctor. The same witness stressed, among other things, that she was initially examined by another doctor of Hippocrates, but it seems that the accused then took her over, when she was informed about her case and searched for her via Facebook. The process was interrupted for tomorrow morning, when it will continue with the examination of the other witnesses, among whom are the 36-year-old husband and doctors.

According to the case file, the unfortunate woman, mother of three children, had visited the Hippocratic Hospital on a general duty day to undergo treatment to remove varicose veins from the legs. After the 43-year-old doctor took her to an abandoned area of the hospital, he gave her two strong anesthetic drugs, which, according to what witnesses had testified at the first instance trial, were not necessary for such operations. The anesthetics appear to have caused the woman apnea and respiratory depression resulting in her death.
The defendant then, according to the case file, transported the dead woman (without being noticed by the staff) in his car, drove her to Halkidiki and threw her body on a cliff in the area of Paliouri, where she was found in a state of decomposition for the next 24 hours. The police from the first moment considered him a suspect, as he was the last one who appeared to have contact with her. It was not -but- only the telephone communications that “betrayed” him, but also the GPS in his mobile phone device, which recorded the entire route that followed from Thessaloniki to Halkidiki, while -in addition- in his car was found organic material of the deceased.

For the case, the Administrative Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki awarded the relatives of the 36-year-old compensation of 700,000 euros, according to their lawyer.
