An incredible story sees the light of day today and which concerns the temporary arrest of a 43-year-old unsuspecting shopkeeper in Almyros, for illegal possession of ancient objectsafter complaint.

According to the Police, after a search carried out in a house owned by the 43-year-old, but also in the surrounding area, the following were identified and confiscated:

  • 14 stone objects (architectural members, base, etc.),
  • 2 ceramic utensils,
  • 1 marble section (possibly column)

The competent Ephorate of Antiquities claims that they fall under the provisions of the legislation for the protection of antiquities, at which time they were handed over for further examination and dating.

The 43-year-old was arrested at his shop yesterday in Almyros, after a complaint that in the house he inherited a year ago from his uncle who died, there were stone objects and utensils.

The detainee does not live in the specific house and in his apology he claimed that he did not know the existence and the archeological value of the confiscated objects.

For the time being, the 43-year-old was released by order of the prosecutor, the objects will be assessed by the Tax Office of Antiquities and with the conclusion that will be drawn up, the case file will be completed and will be sent competently in order to prosecute a crime or misdemeanor.
