Marder armored vehicles: Mutually beneficial for Germany – Greece Ukraine support

by

Germany will provide East German BMP-1 type armored combat vehicles (received in 1994) to be sent to Ukraine, and will replace them with an equal number of German-made Marder type armored combat vehicles

Deutsche Welle speaks of a “scheme” of support for the Ukrainian resistance, with benefits for both Greece and Germany, referring to the current statements of the German Deputy Government Spokesman Wolfgang Buchner.

Germany will concede armored combat vehicles of East German type BMP-1 (received in 1994), to be sent to Ukraine, and will replace them with an equal number of German-made Marder combat vehicles, based on the agreement of Prime Minister Kyriakos Slagos Mitsofterakis .

After the change of tone and content in the current government briefing in Berlin on Greek-Turkish, after the statements of the previous days that were interpreted as observing “equal distances between Greece and Turkey”, questions were asked about the Chancellor’s announcement yesterday of an agreement with the Greek government for the exchange of weapons systems with the ultimate goal of supporting Ukraine. The government briefing confirmed the shipment of Soviet-type equipment from Greece to Ukraine, in exchange for the delivery to the Greek army from the German armaments industry of modern Marder type armor.

The German-Greek agreement was mentioned this morning, from the podium of the German parliament, and Chancellor Soltz, who referred to yesterday’s contacts with Kyriakos Mitsotakis on this. “After the Czech Republic, Germany and Greece are starting such a model of assistance to Ukraine,” Olaf Solz said.

However, no further details were given at the briefing regarding the exchange of weapons systems between Greece and Germany, neither by the government representative nor by the representative of the Ministry of Defense. At the moment, it is not known how much German armor Greece will receive from Germany and when, nor the cost of the whole process.

Germany will buy 60 Chinook helicopters from US Boeing to replace its aging CH-53 fleet, Berlin said in the meantime.
