Two people lost their lives in a car accident that occurred early in the morning at the height of the western junction of the Egnatia Road Komotini – Xanthi. Officers of the Border Guard Department of Sapon of the Rodopi Police Directorate made a stop signal in a car. a car moving on the road, but the driver did not comply and continued on his way, developing speed and driving dangerously.
Eventually, the vehicle was found on the Egnatia Road Xanthi – Kavala (between the settlements of Vanianos – Zarkadia) to have overturned after hitting protective bars. The driver of the vehicle, who was illegally transporting thirteen migrants inland, was fatally injured in the accident, of which one migrant was also fatally injured.
The two fatally injured and twelve more migrants who were riding in the vehicle were transported to the hospital of Xanthi.
According to an announcement by the General Regional Police Directorate of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, the driver-trafficker has worked in the past and has served relevant prison sentences for similar and other offenses.
The vehicle and a pair of license plates were confiscated, for which theft had been reported on April 7, 2022 to the Thessaloniki police service. The preliminary investigation is carried out by the Border Guard Department of Rodopi Soaps.
